Foundation Course

Introduction to Applied Ergonomics

Eligibility: Participants must have a health background if they are not a physiotherapist.  If you’re not a physiotherapist, please get in touch with us first so that we can check your suitability for this course.

This course is comprised of 2 modules:

Module 1: is undertaken independently online at your own pace. Please allow around 6 hours to complete.

Module 2: is a 1 day face-to-face study day once Module 1 has been completed. This will enable delegates to develop the ability to conduct a competent ergonomics risk assessment in the workplace, predominantly concentrating on physical factors. A number of ergonomics risk assessment tools will be taught. The delegate will be able to undertake an ergonomics assessment of an individual, or a small group, in a setting where the issues are mainly physical. The delegate will be able to prepare a suitable report of such assessments, with recommendations to manage identified risk.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the systems and participative approach to ergonomics.
  2. Feel competent to identify risk factors in a work setting.
  3. Plan and undertake an ergonomic assessment of an individual or small group in a setting where the issues are mainly physical.
  4. Undertake a job analysis utilising ergonomic risk assessment tools.
  5. Feel competent in writing a report with recommendations that reduce or manage identified ergonomic risk.

NOTE: This course does NOT cover the assessment of Display Screen Equipment (DSE) users. This is a separate course: Office Ergonomics.

Assessment of Functional Capacity

Eligibility: Participants must have a health background if they are not a physiotherapist. If you’re not a physiotherapist, please get in touch with us first so that we can check your suitability for this course.

Cost: £245 (£220 Early Bird Rate up to 31/08/2026)

This course will enable you to confidently conduct Functional Capacity Assessments.  This includes carrying out safe and meaningful functional measurement tests, interpreting your findings alongside wider assessment components, and producing balanced, evidence‑based reports that support sound decision‑making for workers, employers and case managers.

Module 1: 4 hours of independent online learning at your own pace, including a multiple-choice test. Module 1 must be completed prior to attending Module 2.

Manual Handling for Clinicians

Participants will gain a clear understanding of the evidence and legislation underpinning manual handling training, learn to use objective tools to assess and control risk, and develop the skills to critique and improve manual handling techniques. They will understand how to design effective course content, work confidently with clients to tailor training to their needs, keep participants engaged, and create bespoke manual handling training solutions for any sector.

Occupational Health Essentials Module 9 - Report Writing

Eligibility: Module 9 is for physiotherapists and other professionals who are new or interested in occupational health, to critically be able to produce clear, professional reports that support employee health and work outcomes.

Module 9 is FREE if you are an ACPOHE member.

Our courses are available to all ACPOHE Standard, Technical and Registered Members.  Some of our courses are open to Student, International and Associate Members too, making them suitable for any professional working in, or interested in, Occupational Health. 

The 1st module of our Occupational Health Module is FREE and available to anyone. Otherwise, you will need to become an ACPOHE member to do one of our courses.

If you’re beginning your OH journey, we recommend starting with Occupational Health Essentials. It gives you a strong foundation in core principles, workplace assessment skills and safe, effective OH practice.

No – many of our courses are suitable for beginners. You can build your knowledge from the ground up with our foundation courses, then progress to more advanced learning as your confidence and skills grow.

You can take courses individually or follow our structured pathways. Foundation courses help you get started, Technical Membership courses build practical workplace skills, and advanced courses support progression towards Registered Membership. Find out more here.

Yes – several courses are open to Associate Members, making them suitable for any professional working in, or interested in, Occupational Health. Some advanced courses are physiotherapy‑specific and these will be clearly indicated.

You can choose from a range of standalone courses, including topics like Advanced Ergonomics, DSE, workplace assessments and condition‑specific training. These are ideal if you want to deepen your expertise without following a full pathway.

All ACPOHE courses are available to book and access through our Work and Health Learning and Development Hub.  Your place is confirmed once we have received your payment.  Please read our Course Cancellation Policy before booking.  If you’ve recently joined ACPOHE, please note that Hub access is updated every two weeks. Yes – a corporate booking for ACPOHE courses involves the interested party (corporate host) paying upfront for the cost of the course and being responsible for the provision of the venue, the administration and the smooth running of the course. A corporate booking is likely to save costs on delegate travel and may lead to cheaper course fees for the host organization, if the course is well attended.   If are you interested in being a corporate host, please email us to discuss further.
